Why Did I Write Hidden?
I love reading thrillers, crime, and mystery books. It made sense that I wrote a crime mystery book.
The author, Toni Morrison, said,
“If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”
I wanted a book full of twists and turns, set in the 1980s, and one that reflects on my kind of council estate background. I hadn’t found it, so I wrote it.
Any excuse to research and write about the eighties is always a good one. I’ve had so much fun rediscovering the best decade.
Council estates feature in lots of novels but they always seem to be in urban gritty areas. The Rembrandt Estate in Hidden is in Oxfordshire, just like the one I lived on. It’s not the same estate though before ex-residents start drawing comparisons!
I wanted an Oxfordshire town like the one I came from. Again, Troddington, the town in Hidden, isn’t my hometown. There are certainly lots of memories that helped shape this novel though.
Hidden is my homage to my home county, hometown, and the decade in which I grew up. Writing what you know isn’t always the bad thing some writers want to call it!
