The A-Z of Hidden
A is for Anger
Did Jen Taylor’s anger kill fellow teenager, Kelly Pratt, back in 1987?
B is for Back
Jen has to look back. Kelly’s mum Doreen is asking questions and wanting answers before she dies.
C is for Claire
Claire Dalton was one of Jen’s best friends when they were kids. Claire is now a reporter, investigating Kelly’s death.
D is for Doodle
Jen’s cat. Doodle rules the house. Because. Cat.
E is for Ellen
Ellen is Claire’s mum. She was once a reporter too. No wonder Jen is worried they’re going to find out what she did to Kelly.
F is for Flashdance
Felicity, the nosey neighbour, favours the off the shoulder jumper and leggings combo from Flashdance.
G is for Graham
Graham is Kelly’s dad. He’s a nasty piece of work.
H is for Headway Practice
Based in Headington, near Oxford centre, this is the counselling service where Jen is the business manager. She’s also studying to be a counsellor.
J is for Johnny
Johnny Rose was Jen’s best friend and major crush. Because of Kelly’s death they were separated in 1987. Jen has missed him ever since.
K is for Kelly
Kelly Pratt is a misunderstood girl, often bullied, mistreated, and desperate to be accepted.
L is for Love
Many characters in the book are looking for love. Some have it. Some thought they did. Some sought it from the wrong places.
M is for Mandy
Mandy is Jen’s younger sister. They have a strong bond until Jen has to leave her sister behind.
N is for Nostalgia
The novel is packed with eighties references and events. If you’re a fan of this decade, you’re going to love this novel!
O is for Oxfordshire
The novel is set in Oxfordshire. Some of the locations are real, some are fiction. Originally coming from Oxfordshire it made sense to set the novel there.
P is for Patricia
Patricia is Jen’s mother. She is a tyrant. I defy you to like her.
Q is for Question
The big question throughout the novel is always, how did Kelly die?
R is for Rembrandt Estate
The council estate where Jen, Johnny, Kelly, and Claire lived is integral to the story. Here you will find dodgy characters, honest people trying to get by, and lots of secrets.
S is for Secrets
The novel is full of them and many characters want to keep them hidden.
T is for Troddington
Troddington is the fictional town where most of the novel is set. It’s based, in part, on my original hometown, although I’ve added lots of extra details.
U is for Unity
There are moments when characters come to realise that they have to unite, despite their hurts.
V is for Voice
The narrative voices in Hidden are distinct. There’s Jen’s first point narrative alongside a third person narrator having a field day taking us back to the eighties.
W is for Waiting
Jen is single. She’s had relationships but they’ve never worked out. She knows it’s because she’s waiting to be reunited with Johnny even though it’s impossible.
X is for Xylophone
*Begs editor to let me stick a xylophone in the novel so this one makes sense*.
Y is for Youth
The events that happened in the characters’ youth have repercussions for the present. We also meet various young people on the council estate, offering some humorous stories.
Z is for Zoo
When the Rembrandt Estate get together to celebrate Charles and Di’s wedding day it’s carnage. The scrum for the buffet table is like feeding time at the zoo!
